DHH Teacher – Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Position Summary
The DHH Teacher provides specialized instruction and educational support to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. The teacher develops and implements individualized instruction based on students' IEPs, communication needs, academic goals, and level of hearing loss.
Essential Duties

• Develop and implement individualized instructional plans and IEP goals.
• Provide specialized instruction in academic, communication, language, and functional skill areas.
• Support students who use American Sign Language (ASL), spoken language, hearing technology, or other communication methods.
• Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, related-service providers, interpreters, administrators, and families.
• Monitor student progress and maintain accurate educational records.
• Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to evaluations and educational planning.
• Modify/adapt curriculum and instructional materials to meet individual student needs.
• Monitor and support appropriate use of hearing aids, FM/DM systems, cochlear implants, and other assistive technology as applicable.
• Create an accessible and supportive classroom environment.
• Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and needs.
• Maintain compliance with RCSS policies, Georgia special education requirements, and IDEA.
• Participate in professional development and required district training.

Qualifications

• Valid Georgia teaching certification in Deaf Education / Deaf and Hard of Hearing or the appropriate special education certification.
• Knowledge of DHH instructional practices, IEP implementation, and special education requirements.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students who have varying communication needs.
• ASL proficiency is strongly preferred/required depending on the assignment.
• Experience working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is preferred.

RCSS states that certification/licensure is required when applicable for a position, and its special-education procedures specifically recognize Deaf and Hard of Hearing as an eligibility category. (Richmond County School System)
