School Paraprofessional

Primary Purpose: The School Paraprofessional provides direct support to students and teachers in the classroom to enhance student learning and development. The paraprofessional assists with instructional activities, classroom management, and individualized support for students, particularly those with special needs. The role is essential for ensuring an inclusive, productive, and supportive classroom environment.

Qualifications:

  • Must have 60+ college credits with a 2.5 GPA or a passing score on the ParaPro exam.
  • Or GA Paraprofessional Certification
  • Or willing to take the GA Paraprofessional exam (with passing ParaPro scores to obtain position)
Skills & Experience:
  • Previous experience working with children, especially in a classroom or educational setting, is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and other staff.
  • Knowledge of basic classroom procedures and educational support strategies.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to follow instructions and adapt to various teaching methods and strategies.
  • Organizational skills to assist with classroom setup, materials management, and record-keeping.
  • Flexibility and willingness to support diverse student needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Support: Assist the teacher in delivering lessons, reinforcing concepts, and providing individualized or small-group instruction to students, especially those who may need additional help.
  • Student Supervision: Provide general supervision in the classroom, lunchroom, hallways, and during other school activities, ensuring student safety and well-being.
  • Behavioral Support: Help manage student behavior by using positive reinforcement techniques and implementing behavior management strategies under the direction of the teacher or special education staff.
  • Individualized Support: Work with students with special needs, including those with physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities, to support their academic and personal development. This may include one-on-one or small group instruction.
  • Assist with Classroom Management: Help organize materials, set up learning stations, and manage classroom resources. Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly classroom environment.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records on student progress, attendance, and other documentation as required. Assist with collecting data for student assessments or IEP goals.
  • Collaboration with School Team: Work closely with the classroom teacher, special education staff, and other school professionals to ensure that student needs are met and that classroom activities are effective.
  • Support for IEP Implementation: Assist in implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special needs, as directed by the teacher or special education staff.
  • Communication: Maintain open communication with the classroom teacher and other staff members to ensure student progress and address any concerns. Communicate with students in a clear, positive, and supportive manner.
  • Professional Development: Participate in training and professional development activities as required to improve skills and knowledge in student support and classroom management.

Work Environment:

  • Classroom and school environment, which may include time in various educational settings such as general education classrooms, special education classrooms, or other learning spaces.
  • Interaction with students of various ages and abilities, including students with special needs.
  • Collaboration with teachers, special education staff, and administrators to ensure an effective and supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to assist with lifting, moving, or helping students with mobility needs if required.
  • Ability to actively engage with students during classroom activities, which may include sitting, standing, or participating in physical activities.
