Special Education Teacher
Primary Purpose: Charter High Schools provide all students, regardless of their previous academic history, the highest quality education in an atmosphere of respect, responsibility and rigor. Position Details:
- Location: Jamaica, NY (QUEENS)
- Pay: Starting at $48/hr
- Hours: M-F 8:15a-4:15p
- Schedule: May vary based on location
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid NY teaching certification In Special Education.
- MUST HAVE High School and/or Middle School grade level experience
- MUST HAVE experience working within general education classroom with supports
- Ability to work collaboratively in a co-teaching environment
- Experience working with students with a range of disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism, developmental delays, etc.)
- Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly in urban settings.
- Case manager experience for students' IEPs, including lesson modifications and small group support.
Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience in lesson planning with clear objectives and assessment methods
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Familiarity with Common Core State Standards and educational technology.
- Strong knowledge of special education laws, techniques, and best practices. Excellent communication and interpersonal.
- Skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple tasks, IEPs, and progress monitoring.
- Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping students with special needs succeed.
- Previous experience working with students with special needs in an educational setting is preferred.
- Ability to lift and move classroom materials and equipment as needed.
- Ability to assist students with mobility or physical needs as required by their IEPs.
Responsibilities:
- Co-teach alongside general educators in a classroom setting with approximately 26 students
- Serve as the case manager for students' IEPs, including lesson modifications and small group support
- Develop and implement accessible, content-based curricula in collaboration with team members
- Assess student progress through formal and informal methods
- Build students' academic and socio-emotional skills to promote overall development
- Communicate effectively with families and support teams to coordinate student services
Work Environment:
- Classroom and school environment, which may include both individual and group instruction.
- May involve working with students in various settings (classroom, therapy rooms, or outdoor spaces).
- Frequent interaction with parents, staff, and administrators.
